In the period leading up to Saturday night's game between the Girls (Young Chicks) and Moms (Old, er, Not So Young Chicks) the word was that the Moms team was going to bring a "whippin' stick" to use on the kids.

The Moms talked about their all-state and all-conference players and how good they were and a lot of people believed them. But what the Moms failed to mention was that these ace hoopsters were really good - LAST CENTURY!

How long ago was that?

Well, none of the players on the Girls team were even born yet, that's how long ago.

Since the days of hardwood glory the Moms have spent most of their time sitting on the coach eating bonbons while watching Oprah and Jerry. You, know, when they weren't having and raising kids and working at their jobs.

A real life of leisure with no real thought of blocking out and crossover dribbles. It wasn't a basketball oriented thing … except maybe for Ashley Hersman who doubles as the coach of the Calhoun Middle School girls team. And that's, like, one out of many who kept up with basketball.

And during the game that rust and those bonbons showed as only Hersman and Suzanne Bennett, who was an outstanding player at Roane or Spencer (boo) during her high school days. Hersman had 10. As for the rest of the Moms' shooting, the bulls would have been safe if the moms all had bass fiddles.

Brandi Richards had three points. Three … as the next leading scorer. After that Jeannie Wade, Heidi Allen and Sam Fulks had two each and Betty "Jump Betty" Jones had one which was one less than her husband Jerry "Jump Jerry" Jones Sr. had in the boys game.

For the girls Makayla Smith led the way with a game high 12 points. She was backed by Ashley "Cheeks" Hersman with eight, Tori Allen with six, Alisha Fulks with five and Callie Cooper and Kaylea Bennett with two each. None of the other girls scored as they believed the moms when the talked turned to "losing" their allowance or cellphone or, well, many other important things.

The final score?

Oh, yeah, the Girls won 35-31 after the Moms ran out of bonbon energy in the fourth quarter.

The challenge is open for next year … and the Moms have a year to put away the bonbons and pick up the basketball.

Girls who scored - Makayla Smith 12 points, Ashley Hersman 8 points, Tori Allen 6 points, Alisha Fulks 5 points, Callie Cooper 2 points, Kaylea Bennett 2 points.

Mommas - Angie Hersman 11 points, Suzanne Bennett 10 points, Jeannie Wade 2 points, Heidi Allen 2 points, Betty Jones 1 point, Brandi Richards 3 points, Sam Fulks 2 points.
