MINNIE HAMILTON LTC CROWNS VALENTINE ROYALTY

(02/21/2013)

Queen Florence Hall and King Thelbert Burrows

By Barb McKown

In 2001, a tradition began at Minnie Hamilton Health System's Long Term Care Unit - the annual crowning of the Valentine's King and Queen. Each year, in the week leading up to Valentine's Day, residents, staff, family and community members are given the opportunity to vote for the royalty. A special party is held the Saturday before Valentine's where the winners are announced. This year, residents enjoyed cookies, punch and special singing by Blue Country.

The King and Queen reign for one year and enjoy representing the Long Term Care Unit in the annual Wood Festival Parade and other events throughout the year. This year's royalty was crowned by Jeanette Tingler, daughter of the late Albert and Greta Ball, the 2012 royalty.

The 2013 Valentine's Queen is Ms. Florence Hall. Florence is the mother of 4 wonderful children-Carolyn, Linda, Butch and Kathy. She has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Florence was a cook at Arnoldsburg Elementary School for 12 years. She loves making quilts through hoops and quilting frames. She never used a machine, always sewing by hand. She enjoys gardening and travel and has visited Alaska, Hawaii, Bahamas and Niagara Falls to name just a few places. She was active with the Grantsville Senior Citizens, joining them on many trips.

In 2007, she was the parade marshal for the 40th Molasses Festival. She has always been active in school and church activities, attending Louisa Chapel, volunteering with the 4-H, supported the PTO and was a member of the Rebecca Lodge at Minnora for many years. Her children share she is the best mom in the world. Congratulations Valentine Queen Florence Hall!

The 2013 Valentine's King is Mr. Thelbert Burrows. Thelbert loves God and he loves people. He enjoys setting in the hall in the Long Term Care, greeting every newcomer that comes through the door. Thelbert is a wonderful Christian man who loves his church, Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Beginning as a child with his mother, he helped clean the church and was the official greeter and bell ringer for over 50 years.

He is proud to have been a member of the Methodist Youth for over 40 years. After the church was remodeled, Thelbert took pride in knowing where all the pipes and lines were located. He also assisted in the building of Pleasant Hill Elementary School, sharing with the construction workers where all the gas, water and electric lines were located. For many years, Saturday mornings would find Thelbert standing on the street corner in Grantsville, greeting people and enjoying the conversations.

Thelbert has always enjoyed gardening and keeping a neat yard. Thelbert has one brother named Jim who stops by and visits him frequently. Congratulations Valentine King Thelbert Burrows!
