This time the 'break' went Doddridge's way.

The break wasn't Ashton's Hinzman's 15-foot jumper shot with 2.1 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 44-42 victory over Calhoun Tuesday night at Mount Zion.

No, the 'break' happened a few seconds earlier giving Doddridge the opportunity for the last shot.

With Doddridge's Clayton Yeager missing the second of two fouls shots that left the score knotted at 42-42 Calhoun's Tyler Gerwig grabbed the rebound and was surrounded by three Bulldog players. There was 5.7 seconds remaining when Gerwig grabbed the ball and although all three Doddridge players grabbed and slapped at the ball none was able to get hold of it. Yet, with 5.7 still remaining the officials whistled a jump ball to the dismay of Gerwig and all the Calhoun supporters.

The jump arrow was in Doddridge's favor and the Bulldogs got the ball with 5.7 seconds remaining to set up the final play - Hinzman's game winner.

Had the 'break' gone any other way the game would have at worst gone into overtime. At best Gerwig would have had two free throws at the other end of the court. But it didn't.

Calhoun had the chance to take a two-point lead earlier but with 11.4 seconds left the Red Devils got off a hurried shot from the side that missed and Doddridge grabbed the rebound to set things in motion for Hinzman's heroics seconds later.

Actually two other plays went against the Red Devils that could have had an affect on the game.

One was at the end of the game when the referees failed to see Calhoun desperately trying to call a time out as Hinzman's shot went in. The other came on a three-point heave Calhoun's Ryan Slider took as the buzzer went off at halftime. He was hacked across the arms but no call was made.

The game was extremely close throughout with several ties and several lead changes along the way.

Doddridge, 5-12, took an 8-7 first quarter lead.

Calhoun, 2-18, rallied at it was 18-18 at intermission.

The Bulldogs got a bit of an upper hand in the third period outscoring the Red Devils 14-12 for a 32-30 lead going into the final period.

The Bulldogs pulled out to a five-point lead early in the quarter only to have Trent Phillips do a little long range bombing to tie things up and put the Red Devils back on top. Phillips scored eight of his 11 points in the fourth with a pair of threes and a pressure two.

Slider led Calhoun with 12 points equaling his 12 rebounds.

Phillips was next followed by Ricky Hall with six, Gerwig with four, Sam Brady with three and Luke Moore, Ethyn Miller and Lucas Wilson with two each. Derek Dawson played but did not score for the Red Devils.

Game honors went to Doddridge freshman Drew Lett with 15. Hinzman had 10 followed by Yeager with six, Jeff Bonnell with five, Jesse Lackey and Keith Britton with three and Dylan Hayes with two. TJ Baldwin, David Lipscomb and Josh Bee all played but did not score.

Doddridge also won the junior varsity game by a 51-27 count.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Doddridge continued the assault in the second quarter and was on top 32-6 at intermission.

That's when the Red Devils mounted a charge that closed the gap considerably but not all the way.

Calhoun enjoyed an 11-7 advantage in the third to make it 39-17 heading into the final period.

Brady led Calhoun with eight points and eight rebounds despite only playing in one quarter. He was backed by Luke Sheldon with seven while Nick Watkins added five, Dakota Jarvis, David Workman and Austin Gribble two each and Riley Cain one. Miller, Dawson and MyKia all played but did not score.

Game honors went to Doddridge's Jordan Heckert with nine while Michael Fraley and Lackey had eight apiece. Timmy Shepherd and Lipscomb both had six while Tyler Padgett and Bee had four each. Haynes had two and Jerald Devericks and Devon Yeager both played but did not score.

Calhoun and Doddridge play again Thursday at Mount Zion in the LKC 13th place game. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. And no reserve game is scheduled.
