FLU AND RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS WIDE-SPREAD IN MOUNTAIN STATE

(01/12/2013)
Public health officials say 1,400 cases of flu have been confirmed across West Virginia, but most people with flu-like systems are not tested or confirmed.

Two elderly patients have died from confirmed cases in Kanawha Co.

Public Health Commissioner Marian Swinker said that flu-like symptoms are widespread, with more than 15,000 people telling doctors they were ill last month and nearly 4,400 reporting they're sick so far this month.

Swinker is encouraging people to get a flu shot and take other precautions to avoid getting sick, such as washing hands frequently, covering sneezes and coughs, and discarding used tissues.

Swinker also urges those who are sick to stay home from work or school to prevent the spread of illness.
