Opal Spencer, 96 - formerly of Spencer

Opal Spencer, 96, of Buckhannon, formerly of Spencer WV, passed away on January 3, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born March 4, 1916 at Harmony, a daughter of the late Daniel M. and Lola Kiser Raines. She was retired from the Roane County Board of Education where she was a cook at Spencer Elementary School, was a member of the Roane General Hospital Auxiliary and Rebekkah Lodge, and was a Little League baseball volunteer.

Opal is survived by a daughter, Beverly Spencer of Buckhannon; two grandsons and their wives, Tim and April Spencer of Spencer and Mark and Sara Spencer of Barboursville; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Spencer of Barboursville and Aydan and Adyson Spencer of Spencer; one granddaughter, Rick Ann Spencer of Huntsville, Alabama; a sister, Belva Jordan of Toledo, Ohio; and two brothers, Denver Raines of Kanawha City and Darrell Lester Raines of Warrenton, Virginia.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram Spencer in 1979; a son, Richard Spencer in 1970; three sisters, Wilma Jones, Gae Buck, and Dona Ellis; and three brothers, Donald, Dotson, and David Raines.

A service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 6 at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer with Rev. Garry Bowen officiating. Burial will follow in the Eventide Cemetery in Spencer. Visiting is two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
