Hershall Jones, 96 - formerly of Gilmer County

(12/31/2012)
Hershall Jones, age 96, of Elkins, WV, formerly of Kanawha Drive Community, Gilmer County, departed this life at 9:42 a.m., Saturday, December 22, 2012 in Valentine Health Care Center, Elkins following an extended illness.

He was born July 18, 1916 in Gilmer County, a son of the late Willie Lawson and Blanche Ellyson Jones.

His early career found him in the oil & gas fields working for Harley Satterfield and Otis Hardman as a tool dresser and driller. He would have to work away from home and only be home on weekends. He then began his job with Carnegie Gas as a well tender and retired after 25 years with them.

After his retirement he began to golf and you could find him on the course all the time and he even became chaperone and transported the high school golf teams. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing the violin, harmonica and banjo.

A 52 year member of Glenville Presbyterian Church, Hershall was a trustee, Elder of the Church and sang in the church choir and also provided transportation for elders in the church to and from church. He and his beloved wife Helen loved to eat at Shoney's, so every Tuesday they would head out and find everyone waiting on them--same table, table set, drinks ready and they called them grandma and grandpa.

On June 22, 1938, he was united in marriage to Helen Bramer Jones who recently passed on October 30, 2012. Hershall could be heard daily singing to Helen "Let Me call you Sweetheart."

Surviving are one daughter and three sons, Dianna Ryan and husband Roy of Elkins, Douglas L. Jones and wife Winnie of Newark OH, Dexter L. Jones and wife Carolyn of Beckley WV and Dennis L. Jones and wife Sharon of Spring TX; ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Dessie Louise Wolfe of Glenville.

Along with his Wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Okey Lawson Jones and one sister, Madaline Davidson.
