WEST NILE VIRUS IN WEST VIRGINIA - Spread To 34 States

(07/31/2002)
The mosquito-bourne West Nile Virus, confirmed last week in Jackson County, has now spread to 34 states. The virus has become a permanent threat, but no one knows how serious the disease could affect people, although there have been 161 validated cases and 18 deaths across the country.

The disease is spread by mosquito bites from nearby "mud" puddles, stagnant ponds or other breeding places.
