CHARLES FORK SEARCH ENDS FRIDAY MORNING - Ordeal Caused By Darkness And Sick Dog

A search for a biker and a dog ended at 3 a.m. Friday, when one of the rescue teams from the Spencer-Roane Volunteer Fire Department found them along the back trails of Charles Fork Lake.

Spencer Fire Chief Rob Miller said about four bikers who came for the Tour de Lake bike race Sunday, were riding around the the lake with the dog, when the Labrador become ill.

When darkness fell on the trail, members of the group went out for help. "None of them were familiar with the area," said Miller.

At least one individual stayed with the sick animal, waiting for rescuers to return.

Miller said the animal unfortunately died.

The Spencer-Roane VFD dispatched rescue teams and equipment to the lake area about 10 p.m. Thursday night.

Miller said the department is familiar with the Charles Fork area, pre-planning problems which could occur there.
