FORGERY PROBLEMS FLARE IN REGION - Stolen Checks Used To Access Cash

(07/20/2002)
Police are investigating a forgery scam operating in several West Virginia counties, including Clay and Braxton. The forgeries have hit three banks, City National, Capital State and United.

Checks or other items with bank account numbers have been stolen, apparently from mailboxes and used to access cash.

Some of the checks have been written for over $800, with the transactions being made at drive-in windows.

The forgeries have occurred in five other counties.

Some of the access was made by using check numbers from checks mailed to pay bills.
