An investigation is continuing in the alleged rape of a 17-year-old Roane County girl
two weeks ago in a wooded area known as Craig Ridge. Police have arrested Joe
Alan Hughes, 26, of Ann Street, Spencer, charging him with second-degree sexual
assault. Another 16-year-old suspect is being charged in juvenile court.
Police say the incident happened on June 8 when adults provided a supply of alcohol
to at least nine underage individuals.
The girl states she recalls smoking marijuana and drinking liquor and beer, at which
time she said she passed out and did not come to until several hours later. She was
taken to Roane General Hospital.
Witnesses said Hughes took the girl to the woods and had sex while she was
intoxicated.
Jeffery Allen Mace, 20, of Spencer, along with Hughes, has been charged with nine
counts of contributing, providing alcohol to underage minors.
