POLICE MAKING RECORD NUMBER OF ARRESTS IN CALHOUN

(03/27/2012)
By Bob Weaver

Police in Calhoun County have made what is likely a record number of felony and misdemeanor arrests during the first 90 days of 2012, according to magistrate clerk Gary Smith in Grantsville.

While the numbers indicate a crime spree, the likelihood is that law enforcement is doing a much better pro-active job responding, investigating and making arrests.

Smith says authorities filed 86 felony crimes and 350 misdemeanors for all of 2011.

In the first three months of this year, they've already filed nearly 50 felonies and 102 misdemeanors.

During the last year, the State Police presence in the county has increased and officers are responding to calls and patrolling.

There have been problems for several years of ignoring meth making in the county, in several instances losing evidence in high-profile cases or appearing to drop the ball with investigations.

For over a decade, while hundreds of meth arrests have been made in neighboring counties, less than a handful have been made in Calhoun.

The county has experienced an increase of deaths that have led to murder charges, with four indictments last week.
