West Virginia's second area code is nearly three years old but there's still little demand for it, after telephone officials said they were running out of 304 numbers.

The 681 area code went into effect in late March 2009.

Frontier spokesman Dan Page says the company only has 87 accounts in the state with the 681 area code.

Comcast, nTelos and West Side Communications representatives say their companies still have numbers with the original 304 area code available. None has issued any with the 681 area code.

The possible reason for the lack of demand is the popularity of cell phones vs. land lines.
