WOMAN'S BODY PULLED FROM HUGHES RIVER - Drowned In Effort To Save Her Child

(06/10/2002)
The drowned body of a Wood County woman was recovered about noon today from the Hughes River, not far from the Cisco docks and near the Ritchie-Wirt County line (Rt. 47), according to the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department. Smithville dispatched ten men to the rescue operation.

The victim was about 100 yards downstream, said the department spokesperson.

About eight other regional fire departments helped with the dragging operation, in addition to Ritchie and Wirt VFD's. "The cooperation was excellent," said the Smithville department spokesperson. The identity of the woman is yet to be released.

The woman reportedly jumped into the swift water to rescue her child, who was in difficulty. She was swept away after she was able to bring the child to safety.

The first call for assistance was Saturday evening at 5:15 p.m. to an area along the river dotted by hunting and fishing camps.

The dragging operation was called off at dark Sunday evening and resumed at daybreak today.
