DRUGS STOLEN FROM ROANE AMBULANCES - Twenty-Nine Vials Replaced With Saline Solution

(12/21/2011)
State Police say medicines, more accurately pain killers, have been stolen from ambulances at the Roane County Emergency Squad in Spencer.

Authorities say dozens of vials of drugs have been replaced with saline in five of Roane's six ambulances.

Twenty-nine vials of morphine and fentanyl have been compromised and replaced with saline solution, they report.

Police say the theft of the medications are for personal abuse or for sale.

State Police say the tampered medicine was discovered Monday, indicating it has happened before.

"It is something we take very seriously ... "We have an internal investigation going on at this time," said EMS Director Danny Cronin.

Trooper J.T. Pertillo is handling the case, with the vials being handed over to the State Police's forensic lab for further examination.
