Odbert V. "Gene" Ellyson, 85 - Glenville

Odbert V. "Gene" Ellyson age 85 of Glenville, West Virginia (Sinking Creek Rd. Community) departed this life at 9:50 a.m., Friday November 11, 2011 at his residence following an extended illness.

Born February 16, 1926 son of the late Odbert P. and Ruth Burnside Ellyson.

Mr. Ellyson attended Tanner High School and graduated from Pittsburgh Barber School in 1946. He was a Navy veteran serving his country from 1942-1944, where he was in the North Atlantic and South Pacific. Gene was on the USS-Marble Head until it was de-commissioned. He served 18 years as a County Commissioner for Gilmer Co. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star.

He was a barber for 44 years in Gene's Barber Shop. He attended Glenville Community Church and he also sang with several gospel quartets and was an avid coon hunter. Gene will be missed not only by his family, but by those lives he touched with acts of kindness. We have lost a great man, but the Lord Our Savior has gained another solider.

On July 27, 1946 he was married to Edith Lockard Ellyson who survives at their Sinking Creek Home. Also surviving are 6 children, Doris Jean Adams (husband Rodney) of Troy WV, Gary Ted Ellyson of Gassaway WV, Carmen Smith (husband Bill) of Sand Fork WV, Kurt Ellyson (wife Debbie) of Burnsville WV, C.J. Ellyson (wife Cindy) of Summersville WV, Tom Ellyson (wife Shelley) of St. Mary's WV; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mary Lou Rymer (husband Bill) of St. Albans WV, Lorene Cunningham (husband Bud) of TN, and Bobby Wright of SC.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 1 grandson, Captain Michael Shane Adams; 1 sister, Collene Collins; and 1 daughter-in-law, Lurene Scott Ellyson.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc. Glenville, 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 15 with Pastor Randy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery (Rt. 5 west) Glenville. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Mortuary.

Ellyson Mortuary Inc. is assisting the family of Gene Ellyson with arrangements.
