Mary Elizabeth Young, 95, Glenville

Mary Elizabeth Young, 95, formerly of 704 Mineral Road, Glenville, WV died Thursday, October 6 at the Glenville Care & Rehabilitation Center in Glenville, WV.

Miss Young had lived in her home on Mineral Road all her life, having been born there May 13, 1916, the youngest child of Atty. Guy Bell and Love Hannah Fling Young.

She graduated from Glenville High School in 1934 and received her bachelor's degree in 1938 from Glenville State College. She taught several generations of Gilmer County children, having worked for eight years in Glenville schools and for 28 years at Sand Fork Elementary School.

She was among the first teachers across the United States to conduct the initial eight-week summer session of Head Start in 1965.

In addition to years devoted to formal education, Miss Young also taught scores of local students in private piano lessons. Beginning at age 16, Miss Young played piano and organ for services at the First Baptist Church in Glenville, until her retirement from that position in November 1994.

She also had played for countless school and church programs, as well as with her brothers in dance bands.

Throughout her life, Miss Young enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She always had a beloved dog at home, and she was a familiar sight in the Northview neighborhood of Glenville as she accompanied her canine friends on daily walks.

Miss Young was preceded in death by her mother in 1925 and her father in 1962. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Donald Bell; Maynard F. and G. Bayard.

She is survived by four nieces and a nephew: Gail (Robert) Workman of Littleton, NC; Melinda (John) Landolt of Shepherdstown, WV; Deborah Holly (Stephen) Helvig of Elizabeth City, NC; Guy B. (Betty) Young II or Richmond, VA; Judi (Tom) Tarowsky of St. Clairsville, OH. She is also survived by 13 great-nieces and great -nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Glenville 1st Baptist Church with Rev. Kenny Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in the Otterbein Cemetery. Family and friends will be received from 10:00-11:00 a.m., the day of the services at the Church.
