FALL TURKEY SEASON STARTS SATURDAY IN 33 COUNTIES

(10/21/2011)
South Charleston, W.Va. - "The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) predicts the wild turkey harvest will be similar to or slightly higher this fall than during the 2010 fall hunting season," said Paul Johansen, Assistant Chief in Charge of Game Management for the DNR Wildlife Resources Section. This prediction for a slightly higher fall turkey harvest is based on current mast conditions and wild turkey brood reports. The season opens October 22 in selected counties.

"Less abundant mast conditions this fall across much of the state will tend to concentrate wild turkey flocks near available food sources and make them more available to hunters," noted Johansen. "DNR field personnel also reported an increase in the number of wild turkey broods observed this year."

A total of 33 counties in West Virginia will be open to wild turkey hunting this fall. Counties open to fall turkey hunting include the following:

· Fourteen (14) traditional fall hunting counties will be open to a four-week season (October 22 - November 19, 2011). · Seven (7) counties will be open to a two-week season (October 22 - November 5, 2011). · Twelve (12) counties will have a one-week season (October 22 - October 29, 2011).

More information on the fall wild turkey season and other hunting regulations can be found in the 2011-2012 West Virginia Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary. Copies of this brochure are available at DNR offices, license agents, and on the agency's website www.wvdnr.gov
