VALEDICTORIANS AND SALUTATORIANS WILL DELIVER COMMENCEMENT ADDRESSES - CHS Will Be Jam-Packed

Calhoun County Schools has named Darris Hupp and Shane Yeager as valedictorians and Shaina Cain and Sonja McKown as salutatorians for the Class of 2002 at Calhoun County High School.

These four students will be recognized during graduation exercises on Friday, May 31, 7:00 p.m. at the school.

Darris Hupp, Valedictorian

Darris is the son of Russell and Regina Hupp of Creston. He has participated in the band, academic team, HSTA (Health Sciences and Technology Academy), Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, 4-H/Teen Leaders, S.C.O.R.E.S., and Governor's Honors Academy.

Darris was a Know Your State Government Day representative, a Young Writers winner, and placed in the top four in the Regional Math Field Day the last two years. He has been active in AWANAS and volunteered at Energy Express.

He will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology majoring in electrical engineering and computer science and plans to have a career as a computer engineer.

Shane Yeager, Valedictorian

Shane is the son of Jim and Sharon Yeager of Big Springs. He is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (secretary), chess club, senior league baseball, the academic team, the marching and concert band, choir, follies, and was a Governor's Honors Academy nominee.

Shane is an American Red Cross Blood Drive volunteer and a member of the Blessed Hope Baptist Church where he is the youth group leader and a choir member. He has been a county winner in the Math Field Day and a regional participant, a first place percussionist in the marching band and received the U.S. Achievement Academy Award in Science.

Shane will attend Davis and Elkins College in the fall and major in English. He is planning a career in writing and/or music.

Shaina Cain, Salutatorian

Shaina is the daughter of Daniel and Barbara Cain and resides at Big Bend. She will attend Georgetown College in Kentucky majoring in chemistry. Her goal is to become a medical missionary.

She is an American Red Cross volunteer and is involved in the Brooksville Baptist youth and mission groups and AWANAS.

Shaina is a member of HSTA (Health Science and Technology Academy), varsity basketball, the academic team, Vandalias, choir, S.C.O.R.E.S., Girls' State, Governor's Honors Academy, math field day, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, yearbook and student council. She attended Know Your State Government Day, is a Scholar Athlete and placed 1st and 2nd in Vocabulary at S.C.O.R.E.S.

Sonja McKown, Salutatorian

Sonja McKown resides at Orma with her parents Bradley and Brenda McKown. She is the Mu Alpha Theta president, a member of National Honor Society and Student Council, and plays softball. She was named to the LKC second team infield in softball and attended Girls' State.

Sonja is a mentor/tutor and volunteers at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center and the American Red Cross Blood Drive.

Sonja hopes to work as a Radiology Technologist after obtain and Associates Degree at West Virginia University Hospital School of Radiology.
