ROANE FATALITY HAPPENED WHEN VICTIM CROSSED CENTER LINE - Four CRI Employees Identified

(08/13/2011)
The Roane County Sheriffs Department says the vehicular death of Cary Smith, 38, on State Rt. 36 near Newton-Wallback on August 1, happened after the 2000 Jeep Cherokee he was driving crossed the center line and collided with a 2009 GMC Sierra truck belonging to Community Resources, Inc.

The CRI truck was a weatherization vehicle operated by the agency.

The driver of the CRI truck, according to Sheriff Todd Cole, was Nathaniel Joel James, 31, of Normantown.

James was air-lifted to a Charleston hospital, while three other passengers were taken to the hospital by ambulances from Roane, Clay and Kanawha County.

The sheriff's report identified the passengers as Travis Bell, 30, Mark Husk, 45, and Mike Welling, 38.

Spencer Newspapers reported that the four CRI employees are no longer patients at CAMC General in Charleston.
