Lakie E. Gherke, 91 - Grantsville

(08/10/2011)
Lakie E. Gherke, 91, a resident of Minnie Hamilton Long Term Care of Grantsville, West Virginia, went home to be with her Lord Wednesday, August 10, 2011.

Born March 14, 1920 in Roane County West Virginia, Lakie was a daughter of the late Elum and Delphia Carpenter Ward.

She and her husband Olin were the owners and operators of Gherke's Department Store in Grantsville, later retiring to become a housewife and looking after her grandkids. During the store business Lakie made many friends that she never forgot throughout the years and many that she still kept in touch with.

Lakie was a strong person, she always kept a smile on her face and didn't complain no matter how bad she felt or how things were. The thing that she cared for the most was her family and making sure they were taken care of.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Olin M. Gherke; two brothers, Charles Brooks Ward and Elum David Ward; two sisters, Marjorie Bechtle and Virginia Hill; three half brothers, Ulrich, Bernard and Frederick Wilson.

Lakie is survived by one son, William O. Gherke (Sharon); and a daughter, Carolyn Small (Richard); grandchildren, Michelle Nichols (Gary), Jenny Smith (Bob), Craig Gherke (Janet), Jan Whited (Steve), Chad Small (Christy) all of West Virginia; two half sisters, Betty Snider and Alice Boegher both of Columbus, Ohio; 12 great grandchildren and many extended family. Lakie was loved by and will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 13 at Stump Funeral home in Grantsville. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
