GATES GIVES WV $1 MIL TO HELP STRUGGLING COLLEGE STUDENTS - State Among Worst In Nation For Completion

(08/11/2011)
West Virginia is one of 10 states getting $1 million to help more students finish college.

The funding comes from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

West Virginia is among the worst states in the USA for students to complete a college education. Forty-three start college and of those only 17 graduate from college on time.

The Gates funding will be used to focus on revamping remediation courses.

State Higher Education Policy Commission Chairman Dave Hendrickson says students need to get off to a better start, saying there's no doubt the current college completion numbers are poor in the Mountain State.

The program will develop standard learning objectives for developmental math and English courses which will clearly identify what students need to know before entering college level course work, set clear expectations for students, and provide a common tool for faculty to use.
