JULY HEAT RECORDS SURPASS DUST BOWL HEAT 75 YEARS AGO

(08/03/2011)
Last month was the sixth hottest July, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service, at least in the lower land of the Mountain State.

A daily average of 79.2 degrees was recorded in Charleston, making July 2011 the hottest July in 75 years.

The high temperatures were the result of a high-pressure ridge that built up over the central part of the United States and pushed into the region, said NWS.

On average, July has about eight and a half days of 90-plus degree weather. In July 2011, there were 17.

The last hotest weather was in 1934 and 1936 during the dry heat of the Dust Bowl decade.
