WV KNIFE AND GUN CLUB - Violent Murders In Mason County, Man Charged With Shooting Wife

(08/03/2011)
CABELL MAN KILLS WIFE - A Cabell County man has been arrested and charged with killing his wife.

The incident happened on Pea Ridge.

Deputies found 62-year-old Constance Smith dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police said her husband Harry Smith made the call to 911 and said it was an accidental shooting.

They're saying the evidence says otherwise.

Smith is charged with first degree murder and is currently in the Western Regional Jail.

MORGANTOWN STABBING - Sheriff's Deputies responded to a reported stabbing on Dorsey Lane in Morgantown about 1:30 Tuesday morning. They say that at least two women had been involved in an altercation and a woman had been stabbed several times in the neck and back.

Deputies arrested Katara L. Sochko on charges of malicious wounding. Her bond is set at $10,000.

The victim and a one-year-old child were both transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

MASON COUNTY MURDERS - Police say there is enough evidence to move charges ahead against two Mason County men for the murder of Rene Gonzalez.

Authorities say Chad McCallister had been in a fight with Gonzalez over a woman hours before the murder.

Cpl. B. L. Keefer testified McCallister admitted to recruiting Steven Adkins to get "justice" and Matthew Woods to drive him to do it.

The state trooper testified they conspired to rob Gonzalez, also testifying they would give him "a hillbilly ass-whipping."

Steven Adkins allegedly shot Gonzalez.

MASON MURDER RAISES QUESTIONS - In other Mason County murders, police recently returned to s burned out trailer where Ashley Crawford lived.

The trailer burned about the same time in June as Crawford, her husband William "Jeff" Crawford and Ashley's cousin, Tonda Nelson, disappeared.

The bodies of the two women were found in a shallow grave a few miles away.

State Police have yet to say how the two women died.

The bodies were found on the property of the family of one of the men charged in the July 11th shotgun murder of Rene Gonzalez.

Police aren't ruling anything out, but are saying it appears to be a coincidence.

Police have yet to locate William "Jeff" Crawford.
