William W. Greathouse, 93 - Spencer

William W. Greathouse, 93, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Miletree Center, Spencer, after an extended illness.

He was born April 27, 1918, at Spencer, a son of the late James and Lora Parsons Greathouse. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by Erma, his wife of 62 years; an infant son, William Kevin; brothers, Earl and Frank; and sister, Verna Rowan.

He was a member of Boggs Fork Community Church and was a retired employee of Consolidated Natural Gas Company. He was a Bronze Star decorated Army veteran of World War II. Assigned to the 80th Infantry, he fought during the second wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day, then throughout France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria. He also participated in liberating concentration camp prisoners at Dachau.

Survivors include daughters, Karen (Bill) Smith of Parkersburg WV, Peggy (Don) Alvis of Spencer; grandchildren, Robin (Tim) Utt of Parkersburg, Lisa (Dean) Hays of Mineral Wells WV, Tara (Ryan) Goldsmith of Washington WV, Wade Branard (Angela) of Canton OH, and Stacy Branard of Columbus OH; great grandchildren, Nicole Hays, Brooks Utt, Ashleigh Utt, Landon Utt, Kiley Goldsmith, and Brittany Branard; sister, Doil Greathouse of Akron OH, and brother, Parker (Gisela) Greathouse of Akron; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at 1:00 a.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Tom Fletcher and Rev. Russell Stump officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the Short Cemetery, Spencer.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service.
