Leo Pearson Mason - formerly of Wirt County

Leo Pearson Mason passed from this life on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Avon, Ohio.

He was born in Newark, West Virginia, on November 20, 1927, the son of Roscoe Leon Mason and Iva LaDeaux Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lois Mason Mace.

Surviving are his brother-in-law, Daniel Roy Mace of Elizabeth WV; niece, Sandra Mace Tilley of Parkersburg WV; nephew Roy Lee Mace (and wife Sandra Murray Mace) of Palestine WV and a large number of great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mason was educated in Wirt County Schools, graduating with honors. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Glenville State College where he was Valedictorian of his class. He earned his master's degree from West Virginia State College. He enjoyed teaching in one-room schools throughout Wirt County for many years, including serving as principal of a two-room school.

Leo was an avid outdoorsman, especially in his youth; he loved to hike and to enjoy the mountains of his beautiful state. He was also a lover of animals and had several cats and dogs that brought him joy. In his later years he traveled far and wide to ramp dinners as well as other favorite local dishes.

Donations may be made to the St. Elizabeth Scholarship Fund; care of Sister Cheryl, P.O. Box 118 NC, Route 1, Elizabeth, West Virginia 26143.

Service will be Friday, May 20 at 11 a.m. at the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Elizabeth WV officiated by Father Tom Chacko.

There will be a prayer service at Matheny Whited Funeral Home, Thursday May 19, 2011 at 7 p.m. by Sister Cheryl.

Friends and family may come one hour prior to the prayer service.

Interment will be in the Pribble Cemetery in Newark, West Virginia.
