MOTHER NATURE KIND TO 49TH WOOD FEST - 'Takin' It To The Streets'

The 49th annual Calhoun County Wood Festival kicked-off Thursday with Mother Nature looking favorable on the event. The festival continues through Saturday.

This years theme is "Takin' it to the Streets". The festival continues through Saturday.

The carnival is offering a number or rides and attractions behind the courthouse, with food and specialty booths around the courthouse square.

Wood Festival royalty was introduced to the audience last night, followed by gospel music.

Booths will open at 10:00 a.m. Friday and the kick-off of the Grantsville Farmers Market will be from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Wayne Underwood Field picnic shelter.

The Grantsville Lions Club is hosting Bingo, 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Friday evening the Karaoke Cowboys will host preliminary rounds at 6:00 p.m. with finals at 7:30 for the 2011 Wood Festival Idol contest where the winner receives a one song demo recording session at Sweetsong Productions in Parkersburg.

Also on Friday, Calhoun's own Side FX will entertain at 9:00 p.m. featuring the music of Jeremy "Fat Boy" Houchin sponsored by Minnie Hamilton Health System.

Saturday morning at 8:30 will be the Calhoun Wood Festival 5K Fun Run, Walk and Children's Race sponsored by Tim Moore and "Change the Future West Virginia" .

The Kids Day Celebration will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. directly in front of the Courthouse, sponsored by Loren B. Howley, Attorney at Law.

The Grand Parade begins at noon Saturday.

Line-up will be at the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department. This year's Parade Marshals are Burl and Jean Munsey Simers.

A Corn Hole Tournament will take place Saturday in the Stump Funeral Home-Grantsville Senior Center area with the winning team going away with $100 and second place $50.00. Team entry fee is $10 and registration begins at 10:00 a.m. at the information booth. Games begin at 1:00 p.m. sponsored by Holbert's Store.

Immediately following the parade Saturday until 3 p.m., the Bluegrass Alliance will be playing on the Main Street Stage.

The Kiddie Peddle Tractor Pulls at 2:00 p.m. is sponsored by the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department. Registration will begin at noon at the information booth.

More local talent will kick off Saturday evenings entertainment, Stoker 7 and John Richards will be among the talent starting at 3:15 p.m.

Calhoun native Will Freed will be back at the Wood Festival by popular demand. The Will Freed Band starts on the main stage at 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening, sponsored by Houchin Construction.

At 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening, Plan B returns this with a full cross section of music, sponsored by Rogers and Son.

Dangerfield will begin performing at 9:00 p.m. Saturday with Harry Beall, Lyle Kerby, Rick Poling, Roger Bush, Dave Bush and friends, sponsored by Traders Guide.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and the efforts of many, the Grand Fireworks Finale has been added at 11:00 p.m., shot from Pine Creek Hill. Sponsors are Calhoun Banks and the 2011 Woodchuck Contest participants.
