LA PAIX HERB FARM DEVELOPING CHEAP FERTILIZER

(04/22/2011)
Myra Bonhage-Hale of the La Paix Herb Farm in Lewis County is working with West Virginia farmers to develop stinging nettle as a fertilizer.

Bonhage-Hale says it's better for the environment and is more cost-effective.

"If it turns out that as in France, England and Germany, it is quite potent fertilizer, farmers can be able to grow their own on their own land," she said.

"The commercial farmer - the agribusiness type - who is doing the same thing for miles and miles is using a fertilizer that is made of petroleum and it's becoming more and more expensive."

Bonhage-Hale says since the plant stings like a bee, it must be handled with gloves and long sleeves.
