Five students from Calhoun Middle-High School will be traveling to Charleston this weekend as part of a national leadership effort.

The National Youth Leadership Institute (NYLI) was created to foster the development of leaders and help build strong youth programs. The institute has specialized programs for youth at each stage: kids, teens and young adults.

Young adults who have demonstrated leadership skills in their community are eligible to apply to this program. After participating in training, Youth Leaders are responsible for implementing youth events focusing on prevention/self-empowerment in their local areas. Mentors, who are local chapter/association representatives, provide guidance and support.

Local students in NYLI include Chloey Boggs, Kelsey Jett, Tyler Gerwig, Jared Fitzwater, and Logan McKown.

Film producer and recording artist Dr. Eric Benson serves as Mentor for the local group. Benson has been working this year as a middle school science teacher.
