SGT. PERKINS RETURNS FROM AFGHANISTAN

(04/04/2011)
Calhoun resident Sgt. Phillip Perkins has returned home after a one year tour of duty in Afghanistan.

He was among troops returning with Williamstown-based Company C, 2nd Battalion, 104th General Support Aviation Battalion.

Sgt. Perkins had previous combat duty in Iraq with the National Guard unit in Spencer.

His company spent the year in Afghanistan as an air evac service, rescuing and providing air medical care to wounded soldiers and civilians.

Lt. Col. Todd Harnell says the unit is responsible for 800 rescues, which he says makes them the soldier's heroes. The unit would fly in to some of the most dangerous war zones to rescue the wounded warriors on the front line.

Perkins and his company returned to Parkersburg last week, to be greeted by family and community.

Perkins is married to the former Heather Weaver, daughter of David and Sandy Weaver of Grantsville.
