2010 CENSUS REVIEW: CALHOUN AND RITCHIE HAVE SMALL POPULATION INCREASES - Most Regional Counties Have Decline

(12/29/2011)
Despite projections of population loss since the last census in 2000, Calhoun gained 45 citizens, according to the 2010 census.

The slight population increase is likely linked to out-of-state people coming to the county because of the low tax base.

Grantsville, Calhoun's only incorporated town, had a population of 565 in 2000. The 2010 number has yet to be accessed. Grantsville reached a population peak about 1940 at 1,200.

Calhoun and Ritchie appear to be the two regional counties that have gained population. Ritchie has gained 106.

Gilmer County, according to the latest census, has gained 1,533 residents, but that is likely due to the presence of a federal prison.

Roane County has lost 484 citizens and Clay County has lost 944.

Braxton County has lost 179, Wirt has lost 156.
