THURMOND NAMED ONE OF 15 COOLEST GHOST TOWNS

(03/30/2011)

Thurmond, Fayette County, West Virginia

A West Virginia town has made it into a national magazine for being one of America's coolest ghost towns.

Thurmond is among 15 "coolest ghost towns" listed in Travel/Leisure Magazine.

The magazine lists towns that sprang up in the 19th-century old west and have since gone bust, but have been preserved to some degree.

Thurmond was a coal town from the late 1800s. It went from several hundred residents down to eight by 2010.

The Fayette County town is now part of the New River Gorge National River.
