Fred Whytsell, Jr. was seriously burned Wednesday while he attempted to put out a trash fire when it got out of control.

He received severe burns on the lower part of his body and burns to his hands.

A neighbor said Whytsell, who had some debilitating health problems, "burned one of his shoes off his foot."

Funeral arrangements are being made at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer.
