Goldie Elizabeth Carpenter, 93 - Stout's Mills

Goldie Elizabeth Carpenter, age 93 went to be with the Lord from her home at Stout's Mills, West Virginia, at noon Saturday, February 12, 2011 after a brief illness.

She was born in Gilmer County on January 15, 1918 the daughter of the late Willie Virgil and Ocie Collins Wilmoth.

She married Delbert Carpenter on April 26, 1939 who preceded her in death on December 23, 1998.

She professed her faith in the Lord at an early age and at first was a member of the Upper Steer Run Baptist Church and later moved her membership to the Hepzibah Baptist Church at Stout's Mills. She was a faithful member there and served for a long period of time as the church clerk. She read her Bible through several times from Genesis to Revelation and spent a lot of time in prayer.

For many years she spent her time as a homemaker, taking care of her family, raising a garden and canning fruit and vegetables. She moved with her husband to Alderson WV in 1963 and was the cook at Mountain State School for two years. She later worked at Glenville State College for 10 years as a cook. She took a leave of absence from the College to care for her mother and never resumed working there.

While caring for her mother at her mother's home she did a lot of quilting for a great number of people. After her mother died she returned to her own home. She continued to quilt until she suffered a stroke which made it impossible to do.

She is survived by two sons, Virgil Ray Carpenter and his wife Bea of Hartford MI and Robert Earl Carpenter at home; one daughter, Barbara Ann Arble and her husband Harry of Stout's Mills; six grandchildren, Virgil Jr., Linda, Carol, Dennis, Marty and Eric; several great grandchildren; a former daughter-in-law and mother of three of her grandchildren, Jean Brewster; one brother, Hayward Wilmoth and his wife Judy; and several nieces and nephews. She took in two foster boys, Danny Furberry and Charles Miller and raised them as her own. One of them, Charles Miller is still living and resides in Virginia.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Lee and Harold Waitman Carpenter; six brothers, Adrain, Leonard, Clyde, Ola, Stanley and Monroe Wilmoth; and two sisters, Ethel Hash and Grace Wilmoth.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 16 with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Sand Fork Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, at the Mortuary.
