John E. Bailey, 89 - Spencer

John E. Bailey, 89, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Thursday, January 13, 2011, at 4:26 p.m., in Roane General Hospital, Spencer.

He was born September 22, 1921, at Clover, Roane County WV a son of the late Edward Hayes and Effie M. Niday Bailey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Opal Joyce Carper Bailey; his second wife, Marjorie Watson Hess Bailey; sisters, Opal F. Nida, Margaret E. Nida, E. Frances Wright and Mary K. Bailey; brothers, Inman Jacob and James Eugene Bailey.

John was a retired 30-year employee of Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston plant. He worked as a rigger until his retirement in 1977 and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local 598, South Charleston. Also, he was a former part-time employee of his good friend, Clyde Sinnett, Jr., at the Sinnett Funeral Home, Spencer. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in General Patton's 3rd Armored Division. John was a member of the Irvin F. Conley V.F.W. Post 5783, Spencer and the Faith Baptist Church, Spencer.

Survivors include a son, Edward Hill Bailey of Spencer; brother, William J. Bailey of Spencer; two grandchildren, Carolyn Akhtar of Quakertown PA, and John E. Bailey, II of Charleston WV; a great granddaughter, Surayai Akhtar of Beckley WV; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Monday, January 17 at 1:30 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Wayne McGlothlin officiating. Burial will be in the Clover Cemetery, Clover. Military honors will be accorded by members of the local American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V. Posts in Roane County.
