DELEGATE WALKER'S LEGISLATIVE REPORT

(01/15/2011)
David Walker (D-Clay)
House of Delegates
WV Legislature-District 33

Let me begin by saying that it is an honor and privilege to once again represent the 33rd District and the counties of Calhoun, Clay and Gilmer. I am dedicated to moving forward this session and pushing for legislation that will improve the lives and futures of all West Virginians.

As our acting governor, Earl Ray Tomblin, said in his State of the State address, "We need, on so many fronts, to improve our education system."

And he couldn't be more right. An active member of the House Education Committee, I will work diligently to ensure that we are pushing legislation that will ensure a better future for our children. We cannot afford to be left behind in a world that is constantly jumping ahead. West Virginia's children deserve the best education program to prepare them for the best jobs that will come along in their future.

We must work to better our state as a whole. West Virginians deserve nothing less than the devotion of its lawmakers for ensuring a better tomorrow. Agricultural is what our great state thrives upon. I am sponsoring a bill that will provide funding for a spaying and neutering program. We have a vast array of wildlife roaming through our beautiful mountains. But, the overpopulation of our domestic animals is a problem that we can easily fix.

We've already hit the ground running. The House of Delegates has put legislation in motion and passed its first bill to limit the authority of the Parole Board to consider releasing an inmate serving a life sentence who has qualified for release on parole, to once every three years. The time is now and we know that we must continue to move ahead.

One last note, I encourage my fellow veterans to make use of the veterans health care facilities in our great state. These facilities are for all veterans, not only those who served in combat.

As always, I am eager to hear from my fellow members of the 33rd District. You can reach me by calling 304-340-3135, by e-mailing dwalker@mail.wvnet.edu or writing to my office address: Room 210W, Building 1, State Capitol Complex Charleston, W.Va. 25305.
