ROANE COUNTY TARGET FOR PASSING COUNTERFEIT MONEY

(12/23/2010)
Counterfeit money surfaced in Roane County and the Kanawha Valley region this year, with eight people initially indicted by a federal grand jury on counterfeiting charges.

Authorities said they used a scanner and printer to make fake $20 bills and went to Spencer to spend them.

Sources called the money "crude."

Roger L. Atkinson II, 37, of Ripley and Lawrence "BJ" Holbrook, 36, of Spencer, created some of the fake bills, authorities said.

Another counterfeit operation has been discovered in Kanawha County, leading to several arrests.

Fake cash has been showing up at several businesses throughout the Kanawha Valley, but police say they know how the money was made.

Authorities say a trail leads to drug dealers.
