Calhoun Middle School spotted Braxton a big first quarter lead then roared from behind to post a 30-27 victory over the home standing Knights Monday night.

After the Red Devils scored first on a free throw by Lucas Wilson to take a 1-0 lead Braxton scored 10 of the next 11 points and was on top 10-2 with time running down in the first quarter.

That's when the tide turned for the Red Devils and it stayed turned -- although the score remained close -- the rest of the way.

The win lifts Calhoun to 2-3 heading into tonight's game at home against Walton. Walton beat Calhoun earlier in the season 33-21 as the Tigers' Alex Ashley hit 22 to outscore the entire Calhoun team.

In the B game Calhoun kept it close in the first half before Braxton pulled away for a 33-12 victory.

Tyler Gerwig led Calhoun's offense with 11 points and added a game high 17 rebounds. Gerwig was backed in the scoring column by Tyler Sims with nine, Wilson with six, Tyler Tanner with three and Sam Brady with one. William Baker and Luke Sheldon both played but did not score.

The game was Calhoun's best defensive effort of the season, especially out front where Wilson, Sims and Brady came away with a combined 10 steals. Wilson, playing the point, was especially troubling to Braxton's offense as he smothered the Knights' point guard on more than one occasion.

Sims took advantage of Wilson's defensive efforts by stepping into the passing lane and coming away with five steals.

Calhoun's momentum, which started after falling behind 10-2, pulled it into a tie situation 16-16 at the half. The tough, tight contest continued through the third quarter with the score knotted 22-22 heading into homestretch.

Calhoun pulled ahead for good after that and held on for the win when a Braxton three-point shot at the buzzer failed.

Timmy Osborne led Braxton, 1-3, with eight.

In the B game Ethyn Miller led the way with six points while Jerry Jones added five and Riley Cain one. Christopher Kirkland, Chris Thornton, Nick Watkins, Justyn Starcher, Dustin Turner, Austin Bailey, Nick Murphy and Kyle Ferrell all played but did not score. Bailey led the team with five rebounds.

Drew Taylor and Bruce "Batman" Wayne led Braxton, 1-3, with eight each.
