$19 MILLION SPENT IN MANCHIN-RAESE RACE FOR US SENATE

Former West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin [Dem.] and Republican John Raese spent a combined $8.2 million on their hard-fought race for US Senate. But the latest Federal Election Commission filings shows an additional $11 million was spent by national parties and outside groups. A divided US Supreme Court upheld this year that American corporations, unions and businesses can spend endless sums in affecting the outcome of elections. Manchin raised nearly three times as much from individuals and five times as much from political action committees. Wealthy business owner, Raese poured in more than $3 million of his own money to close the fundraising gap, allowing Raese to outspend Manchin. Raese lost the election.
