UPDATE: CALHOUN HUNTER IDENTIFIED - DNR Says Franklin Mitchell, 61, Died Of Natural Causes

Emergency services and DNR officers responded to "a man down" call in the woods off Oka Road at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, with officials on the scene a short time later requesting a medical examiner.

WV-DNR has identified the man as Franklin Ray Mitchell, 61, of Chloe, indicating they believed he had a heart attack.

Mitchell, a California native, was a retired Senior Medical NCO with the U.S. Army. He had worked as education counselor at Park College, Aurora, CO and a safety loss control officer for a cable company in Washington State. He enjoyed his work as a private contractor, working on his farm in Calhoun County.

Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Wilmer "Bud" Richmond officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Minnora Cemetery.

His body was sent to the WV Medical Examiners Office to determine the cause of death.

The incident happened about four miles from State Rt. 16.

A Salem man was accidentally shot by a Fairmont hunter Monday.

He is reportedly in good condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

State Police say 30-year-old Lucas Flannigan was shot in the left hip around 8:00 a.m. Monday near the Lewis and Doddridge County line.

State Police and The Division of Natural Resources are working together on the investigation.

They plan to charge the shooter with multiple misdemeanors, including negligent shooting.

Another hunter suffered serious injuries Tuesday evening when he fell from a tree stand in Marion County and was taken to a Morgantown hospital by helicopter.

A teenager accidentally shot himself in the leg in the woods in Kanawha County the first day of firearm season for bucks.

The 17-year-old teenager accidentally shot himself in the calf with a 30-30 rifle, said DNR spokesman Hoy Murphy.

Division of Natural Resources authorities sent out an all-terrain vehicle to locate the boy "deep in the woods" and a medical helicopter was dispatched to a nearby landing site to pick up the boy.

Earlier Monday, a 14-year-old male accidentally shot himself in the foot in Wood County, Murphy said.

Both teens are recovering.
