(04/26/2002)
A Roane County man, Dempsey Burdette, 21, who shot himself in the chest at the home of his parents at Left Hand on April 4, is recovering from open heart surgery. Reports said Burdette had a second gunshot wound when a person attempted to take the weapon from him.

Burdette reportedly has attempted suicide before. Judge Thomas Evans III has ordered the man to have a mental health evaluation upon his release from the hospital.

The man was to have appeared in a Roane court the day of the shooting. His appearance was based on a probation violation.
