The West Virginia Board of Education honored more than 70 schools throughout West Virginia for earning exemplary status.

Normantown Elementary is one of the schools earning the distinction.

Exemplary is the highest distinction a public school can achieve in West Virginia.

Kenna Seal, Director of the Department of Education Audits said, "We start with a screening of the top ten percent of schools. We weight that in terms of English, language arts, math, science, and social studies."

"This is all about academic achievement," Seal said, indicating it's not easy to meet the standards.

Normantown Elementary was a Gilmer community school that was on the front burner for closure and consolidation.
