Last year Calhoun County endured numerous snowstorms and subfreezing temperatures throughout most of the winter. With temperatures dropping and the possibility of snow this week, winter appears to have paid an early visit to the region. While it is common to feel overly confident about one's preparations when bad weather strikes, are you really as well-prepared as you need to be? Now is the time to stock up on necessary emergency supplies for the winter.

First, make sure you have a fully-stocked first aid kit at home and in your car. Check to see if you need to replace or update your kit with adequate supplies. Also prepare an emergency supply kit, containing a battery-operated or hand-crank radio, batteries, candles, matches, flashlights and a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food. Pack any medical supplies you may need, such as aspirin, pain relievers, or prescription medications. Remember also pet and baby supplies, extra blankets, and clothing.

Then, discuss an emergency evacuation plan with your family. Advance planning will reduce confusion in emergency situations. Discuss evacuation routes, emergency exits, and a meeting place outside the home. Make sure all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Keep a list of emergency contact personnel on hand, and always contact your local 911 in case of an actual emergency.

Once you've made preparations, stay informed about imminent weather or emergency situations by watching or listening to local news. Take all warnings seriously and do not travel if an advisory is in effect.

Being prepared for any emergency is the first step in protecting your family. Take the time now to make sure you have everything needed to protect your family in the future.

If you need more information or would like to purchase a first aid kit for a small donation, please contact your local Red Cross members, Michelle and Megan, at (304)588-0717 or stop by the Grantsville office in the courthouse Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For emergencies call the Mid-Ohio Valley Red Cross Chapter (304)485-7311.
