Melvin Charles Lockhart, 75 - Palestine

Melvin Charles Lockhart, 75 of Palestine, West Virginia, passed away October 21, 2010 on his farm while running his dozer, doing what he liked to do.

He was born September 21, 1935 the son of the late Ivan and Ica Lott Lockhart. He married Pauline Nutter on November 26, 1955.

He graduated from Wirt County High School with the class of 1953.

He was a former member of the Shiloh Baptist Church and in his younger years sang in the Morgan Quartet with Bev Morgan, Dale Goodwin, and Scott Anderson.

He had been employed at Corning Glass and later at DuPont as a production foreman in the Zytel division, until April 5, 1985 when he took early retirement at the age of 48. From that time on he enjoyed the farm with all of the green fields and animals.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, neighbor and friend. He was very giving and caring when someone had a need. He was right there to help in every way.

Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Pauline; one daughter, Lou Ann, and her husband Jeff Thorn; two grandsons Mitchell and his wife Mikal Lockhart, and Justin Thorn; two great grandsons, Ashton Lockhart and Nicholas Thorn, whom he adored; one brother, Harold Lockhart and his wife Janice, one brother-in-law, Bill Nutter and his wife Patty; nephews and nieces, Steve and Juanita Lockhart, Debbie and Lewis Ruble, Mike and Susan Lockhart, Bob and Darlene Lockhart, Jim Nutter, Brenda and Paul Roberts, and Kathy and Paul Hancock; and special friends, Roger, Lottie and Tara Sheppard and a host of other friends and his cats.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Lee Lockhart in 1959 and Randy Lockhart in 2006 and his mother and father-in-law.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, October 25 at Matheny Whited Funeral Home of Elizabeth with the Rev. Robert Stanley officiating. Interment will be at Shiloh Cemetery on Enterprise Road.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until time of the service on Monday.
