CALHOUN PROPERTY REAPPRAISALS STARTED - State Doing Appraisals In 24 Counties

A WV State Property Tax Study will have appraisers in 24 counties this year, including Calhoun. The project's goal is to evaluate the quality of property assessments in all 55 counties. The reappraisal project is based on self-reporting of property owners, with some critics saying the project will have little if any impact. Tyler Technologies Inc. is conducting the evaluations for the state. They will work to validate property sales that took place between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008. Appraisers are contacting Calhoun property owners by telephone or by sending questionnaires to the buyers, sellers and others involved in the sales. They will also be visiting properties that were sold during the period in question, according to the Tax Department. For safety reasons, all independent appraisers and their vehicles will be registered with the Sheriff's Department, local police departments and the County Assessor's office. Each appraiser will carry photo identification. The state Tax Department stressed that at no time will appraisers ask for personal or sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers. The Tax Department has asked that residents cooperate with the appraisers.
