SKATE PARK MEETING SATURDAY - Support Needed Says Garretson, Progress Made

(10/08/2010)
A Skate Park meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Little Court Room of the Calhoun Court House to work on the development of a mini-skate park for the county.

"Skate boarders and BMX riders that are interested in bringing a skate park to the area need to attend to discuss organizational plans," according to Curt Garretson, WVU Extension Agent who is spear-heading the effort.

"Parents and community members are encouraged to attend. For this to be successful, a strong interest is needed in assisting with this endeavor," Garretson said.

The proposed mini skate park is 98' x 56', with designs for the facility already completed. The $24,680 project, includes ramps, concrete and fencing.

Garretson says $5,000 has been granted to the project, through a Governor's Community Participation Program Grant, acquired with the assistance of Del. David Walker.

The committee hopes to obtain additional grants from the Tony Hawk Foundation and raise money through fundraisers through July 1, 2011.

In-kind support is being supplied by the Town of Grantsville, which will provide land and annual insurance costs and from Eric Cain, who will donate labor and time to prepare the land.

"We're hopeful that this project will become a reality for our community," Garretson concluded.
