Several Creston area residents took in the activities at Pioneer Day at Elizabeth & others participated in the activities associated with the opening of the Republican Headquarters in Elizabeth. One of the activities was watching a movie about the American Constitution, a document that is held in disdain by many who now rule in Washington. Speaking of Washington, D. C., the Communist Party, USA and a whole group of other outfits such as the teacher's unions, SEIU, etc. held a rally there and, unlike the Glenn Beck rally, trashed the area.

Euell Russell attended the homecoming at the Southern Baptist Church in Elizabeth and had a great time. Also there was Nathaniel Watkins who is recovering after falling off a roof while on a church project.

Several area residents attended the FFA beef barbecue at the high school in Elizabeth and feasted on tasty Wirt County grown meat. The animal rights activists were not to be found. Among those at the beef feed was W. H. Schenerlein III & IV. W. H. IV also took in Amish country in Ohio, gathering pumpkins from the patch, etc.

The U. S. Postal Service has announced that they plan to officially close the Creston Post Office and are now taking written comments on the matter. Gregory Church, a spokesman for the government agency, said one may write letters to Teresa Price, Post Office Review Coordinator, at P. O. Box 59601, Charleston, West Virginia 25350-9601 before October 30. Local residents are urged to write letters which should probably be sent certified mail so they cannot claim that they didn't get the correspondence. Some while back the bureaucrats from Beckley & Clarksburg held a very contentious meeting in Creston where they were caught up in their own stories and the one 'gentleman' got very hostile when an attorney started to discuss the law they were claiming to 'follow'.

Mildred Garrettson Headley, age 87, of Simpsonville, Kentucky, her sister & four others were visiting in Creston looking at old photographs and touring the community building. She noted that when she was a scholar there were three classrooms and that her teachers included Ralph Wix & J. Wamsley Vandal, Sr. She was the daughter of Roy & Lydia Garrettson & lived out on the Creston Flats. She & her late husband formerly ran the Parkersburg Paint Store on Market Street.

Rev. Keith Belt filled his regular appointment at the Burning Springs M. E. Church and served Holy Communion.

Jim & Barbara Bush were calling in Creston Saturday evening. Jim noted that they had a very successful four day trail ride over near Looneyville with 4 covered wagons and several others on riding horses. Barbara's hair is growing back & she said that she was doing well.

BD Oil Gathering was in Creston Friday hauling Pennsylvania grade crude which fetched $75.75/bbl. The average price for September crude was $69.4083/bbl as quoted by Ergon.

Boots & Coots, the big time oilfield fire control outfit, put out the fire at the Chesapeake Energy well in Marshall County. A local man who was working on the nearby CBM (Coalbed Methane) well reported that the Chesapeake well hit into coalbedmethane and that a piece of rock broke loose and lodged in a valve. One well known operator who has years of experience noted that, "They are supposed to have all the technology and know what they are doing."

Some local residents are taking in beach vacations before winter sets in. Mr. & Mrs. Denver McFarland & Mr. & Mrs. Carl Ferrell returned from the sandy shores while others left out early Sunday morning for the ocean.

Jeremy Ferrell has accepted employment at Coldwater Creek. The folks at Mustang Survival report that they have been having difficulty finding workers and Massey Energy is advertising for experienced underground miners for some southern West Virginia counties.

Folks continue to come and see the damage caused by the tornado whether or not the bureaucrats call it such. A Mr. Maynard from down in the Logan section was checking on whether or not his cabin, situate between Creston & Grantsville, was damaged.

Folks who were traveling in Ritchie County noted that the brine trucks (that haul the water away from the Marcellus shale wells) were heading out toward Mellin Ridge.

Local residents are urged to stock up on light bulbs as the Big Eared One & his environmental buddies want folks to buy mercury vapor lights made in China.
