Calhoun High School Varsity Volleyball team captured 2nd place in the twelve team, Nicholas County Invitational Tournament on Saturday, September 11. Tournament teams were, Nicholas County, Greenbrier East, Lewis County, Robert C Byrd, Woodrow Wilson, Nicholas County B, Independence, Liberty Raleigh, Greenbrier West, Liberty Harrison, Calhoun, and Greater Beckley Christian. All twelve teams advanced from pool play to a seeded, single elimination bracket. Calhoun received a bye in the first round of bracket play as they were ranked 4th out of pool play.

Calhoun was defeated by Greater Beckley Christian 2-1 with scores of 25-8, 18-25, 15-13 in the championship match. Amber Wilford led the team in service points with 6 points, 3 aces; she was followed by Karissa Reip with 4 points, 2 aces; Ashley Houchin 2 points, 1 ace; Rochelle Gerwig, Jordan Mace, and Shayla Arnold with 1 point each. Setting: Houchin 74/75 with 20 assists. Hitting: Wilford 24/25, 7 kills; Gerwig 20/21, 6 kills; Reip 12/14, 3 kills; Samantha Church 6/8, 3 kills; Mace 5/6, 1 kill. In the semi-finals Calhoun defeated Greenbrier West 25-13, 26-24. Wilford led the team in service points with 9 points, 2 aces; followed by Gerwig 6, 2 aces; Houchin 5, 1 ace; Reip 3, Mace 2, 1ace; Arnold 2, 1 ace. Setting: Houchin 58/58, 19 assists. Hitting: Wilford 17/20, 11 kills; Reip 13/14, 4 kills; Church 8/9, 1 kill; Gerwig 7/9, 2 kills; Mace 6/6, 1 kill. Blocks: Wilford 2, Mace 1. Digs: Wilford 3, Houchin 2, Mace 2, Hall 2, Reip 1.

In quarter final action, Calhoun defeated Robert C. Byrd 21-25, 25-22, 17-15. Houchin led the team in service points with 15, 4 aces; followed by Gerwig 13, 2 aces; Mace 4, 1 ace; Arnold 4, 1 ace; Reip 4; Wilford 3, 1 ace. Setting: Houchin 57/58, 22 assists. Hitting: Wilford 21/22, 14 kills; Reip 9/10, 3 kills; 9/10, 1 kill; Church 8/9, 3 kills; Mace 5/6, 1 kill. Blocks: Houchin 3, Wilford 2. Digs: Gerwig 5, Reip 4, Kenzie Laughlin 3, Hall 3.

In pool play, Calhoun defeated Lewis County 25-22, 25-14. Gerwig led in service points with 11, 2aces; followed by Reip 7, 2 aces; Wilford 6, 2 aces; Houchin 3, 1 ace; Mace 1, Laughlin 1. Setting: Houchin 34/35, 9 assists. Hitting: Wilford 10/12, 5 kills; Reip 6/8, 3 kills; Gerwig 5/6, 1 kill; Mace 4/4, 1 kill, Church 4/6. Blocks: Wilford 1. Digs: Laughlin 3.

In pool play, Calhoun was defeated by Greenbrier East 25-19, 25-14. Houchin 5 points, 3 aces and Mace 5 points led the team in service points; followed by Gerwig 4, 1 ace; Reip 2, Chelsea Hicks 1. Setting: Houchin 38/39, 8 assists; Hicks 1/1, 1 assist. Hitting: Wilford 16/19, 6 kills; Gerwig 10/11, 2 kills; Mace 3/3, 1 kill; Reip 1/2, Church 6/8. Blocks: Wilford 4, Stephanie Hall 4, Houchin 2. In pool play, Calhoun defeated Liberty Raleigh 25-20, 25-8. Houchin led the team in service points with 15, 5 aces; followed by Wilford 5 points, 3 aces; Reip 5 points; Gerwig and Mace with 4 points, 1 ace each. Setting: Houchin 52/53, 18 assists. Hitting: Wilford 11/15, 7 kills; Gerwig 11/12, 4 kills; Reip 9/11, 4 kills; Church 10/11, 2 kills; Mace 4/4, 1 kill. Blocks: Wilford 3, Houchin 2. Digs: Mace 5, Reip 4, Gerwig 3, M. Hall 3.

The Varsity will travel to Bridgeport for a tri match with Bridgeport and Parkersburg Catholic on Wednesday, September 15 and both the Varsity and JV will be in action at Braxton County on Thursday, September 16. The JV will play in a JV tournament at Parkersburg Catholic on Saturday, September 18.
