STARTING JAN. 1 TV'S AND MANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES NOT ALLOWED IN WV LANDFILLS

(09/09/2010)
Beginning Jan. 1, televisions, computers and electronic devices with video screens 4 inches and larger cannot be put in West Virginia landfills.

The WV Legislature approved the ban earlier this year.

"The driving force was to make sure we get rid of it responsibly," said Karen Facemyer, R-Jackson.

"When that stuff is dumped in a landfill, it's always going to be in there just as it was the day it was dumped," she said.

WV's Solid Waste Management Board is working with groups to develop diversion plans for electronics in the Mountain State.

So far, there is no plan to take care of the disposal of the devices.

One of two electronic recycling centers in WV is located in Elizabeth.
