Calhoun County Park is a project that has involved hundreds of dedicated volunteers and thousands of volunteer hours over many years, creating one of the most inviting and pastoral park areas in the region.

Calhoun County has not had the financial resources to quickly add the amenities found in many parks, but significant progress has been made with recreational equipment, picnic areas, a community center, walking trails, ball-field areas, ponds and the Heritage Village.

"We have some of the greatest, dedicated volunteers in the world," said Henry Cooper (pictured left) Park Board president.

Cooper said a recent project by the board is the addition of a camping area.

"The camping area is coming along as we have some money," Cooper said. "But without the volunteer help of Donald Poe Gunn, his equipment and workers, we'd be hard pressed."

Cooper said he is hopeful, in time, to have a large number of camping spaces with electrical and water hook-ups around the ridge behind the park barn.

Calhoun County, with increased demand on the county budget for mandates, jail costs, and rising costs, has been unable to provide funding for the park.

"We're having Calhoun Days this weekend in hopes that the public will come and enjoy the park and lots of events we have scheduled," Cooper said. The event includes the Civil War reenactment of the 'Battle of Sycamore.'

"We're also hopeful that citizens who believe in the park will donate to the cause," Cooper said.
