WIRT FIREMAN DIES AFTER STRIKING TREE - Victim Discovered 12-Hours After Accident

A 39-year-old Wirt County man has died from injuries he received Sunday when his vehicle struck a tree just outside Elizabeth on Frog Hollow Road.

John Wayne Starcher was pronounced dead at Roane General Hospital Sunday afternoon.

Was employed by the Wirt County Board of Education for 10 years and was an active member of the Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department 13 years.

State Police are looking into why Starcher was discovered about 12 hours after he wrecked his car.

Individuals riding four-wheelers discovered Starcher standing along the road, describing him as coherent.

Shortly after his discovery, Starcher coded and CPR was performed, according to the State Police.

His body has been taken to the State Medical Examiner's office.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Elizabeth Vol. Fire Department.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-9 Pm at the Elizabeth Vol. Fire Department.
